A Step-by-Step Guide to Calculate SLAs, SLIs, and SLOs for new SREs

Service Level Agreements (SLAs), Service Level Indicators (SLIs), and Service Level Objectives (SLOs) are critical metrics for measuring the performance and reliability of IT services. These metrics provide valuable insights into the quality of service provided to customers and help teams identify areas for improvement. In this blog post, we’ll provide a step-by-step guide to calculating SLAs, SLIs, and SLOs for your IT services, using an example of a microservices-based ecommerce application.

Step 1: Define Your Service

The first step in calculating SLAs, SLIs, and SLOs is to define the service you’re measuring. In our example, we’ll be measuring the performance of an ecommerce application that is built using microservices architecture. The service we’re measuring includes features like product search, browsing, cart management, order placement, and payment processing.

Step 2: Identify Service Level Indicators (SLIs)

Next, you need to identify the SLIs that are most relevant to your service. SLIs are specific, quantifiable metrics that help you measure the performance of your service. Some common SLIs for ecommerce applications include response time, throughput, error rate, and availability.

For our ecommerce application, we’ll focus on the following SLIs:

Response Time: The time it takes for the application to respond to a user’s request Throughput: The number of requests the application can handle per second Error Rate: The percentage of requests that result in errors Availability: The percentage of time the application is available for use

Step 3: Define Service Level Objectives (SLOs)

Once you’ve identified your SLIs, you need to define SLOs for each of them. SLOs are specific targets that you aim to meet for each SLI. SLOs are typically set based on customer expectations, industry standards, or the performance of similar services.

For our ecommerce application, we’ll set the following SLOs:

Response Time: 95% of requests should be completed within 500ms Throughput: The application should handle at least 100 requests per second Error Rate: Less than 1% of requests should result in errors Availability: The application should be available 99.9% of the time

Step 4: Calculate Service Level Agreements (SLAs)

SLAs are agreements between a service provider and a customer that define the level of service that will be provided. SLAs are typically based on the SLOs that have been defined for a service.

To calculate SLAs, you need to compare the actual performance of your service to the SLOs that you’ve defined. If your service meets the SLOs, then you’re meeting your SLAs. If your service falls short of the SLOs, then you’re not meeting your SLAs.

For our ecommerce application, let’s say we collected the following data for the last month:

Response Time: 94% of requests were completed within 500ms Throughput: The application handled an average of 90 requests per second Error Rate: 1.5% of requests resulted in errors Availability: The application was available for 99.5% of the time Based on this data, we can see that our application is falling short of the SLOs we’ve set for response time and error rate. Our application is meeting the SLOs for throughput and availability.

Step 5: Identify Areas for Improvement

Finally, it’s important to identify areas for improvement based on the data you’ve collected. If your service isn’t meeting its SLOs, you need to identify the root cause of the problem and take steps to improve performance.

In our example, we can see that our ecommerce application is falling short of the SLOs for response time and error rate. We can identify the following areas for improvement:

Response Time: We need to identify which requests are taking longer than 500ms to complete and optimize those requests. We may need to optimize the performance of specific microservices or identify bottlenecks in our system. Error Rate: We need to identify the types of errors that are occurring and take steps to prevent them from happening in the future. We may need to improve our error handling or implement additional monitoring to identify issues more quickly. By identifying these areas for improvement, we can work to improve the performance of our ecommerce application and meet our SLOs in the future.

The shorter the MTTD, the faster IT teams can respond to issues, and the less impact those issues will have on customers.

MTTD is calculated by dividing the total time between the occurrence of a failure and its detection by the number of incidents during that time period. For example, if a failure occurred at 12:00 pm and was detected at 12:30 pm, and there were two incidents during that time period, the MTTD would be 15 minutes (30 minutes / 2 incidents = 15 minutes).

Why are MTTR and MTTD important?

MTTR and MTTD are important metrics for IT service management because they provide a measure of how quickly IT teams can respond to problems and restore service to customers.
